What can’t the Lumix DMC-GH2 do?

This award-winning Compact Systems Camera excels at almost everything

DMC_GH2

The Lumix DMC-GH2 is probably about the best CSC camera available at the moment – whether you are a photographer, videographer or both. As a stills camera, it can comfortably equal many of the best digital SLRs in terms of picture quality, file size, FPS and options. As a video camera, its silent Auto-Focussing, depth of field control and 60FPS are simply superb.

This flagship camera has a 16 mega-pixel file and full HD video ability as well as a plethora of features and options that really make it stand out of the crowd.

Where to start?  It can shoot 16 MP files at 5FPS, has really quick autofocus and a top ISO of 12800. The quality of the images are such that there is practically no noise at the lower ISOs. The burst speed of 5FPS is for full size files, but it can go up to 40 FPS if you only want 4 MP files. The camera feels great with lots of dials to hand. You have to choice between using the dials to customize your settings or using the adjustable LCD back screen which opens out ona door hinge and  also rotates for high or low view. When using the screen, you can take a picture by simply tapping it. It also give access to various in-camera editing options like resize, cropping and aspect conversion.

This camera is made for the enthusiast photographer, who wants to take excellent videos – or the enthusiast videographer who wants to take excellent photos. Either way, they get what they want – excellence.

The GH2 has a full range of  of scene modes for both stills and video, including portrait, architecture, close-up, peripheral defocus, night portrait and sunset. All these can be made more accessible on the customizable buttons.

The video functions are superb. It offers full HD recording and has an HDMI socket to plug it straight into the TV. There is an external Stereo Mic, although the internal stereo Mic is surprisingly good. The frame size is larger than in most Pro camcorders and the quality really shines through. The silent focussing system makes it a joy to use. Obviously, with so many functions and options, it takes a bit of getting used to, but anyone familiar with D-SLRs, or any of the Lumix G range cameras will soon pick it up. The 16 MP sensor is amongst the largest in its class and it can pack a huge amount of detail into its images. It even allows you to take a hi-res still during video recording. This is a camera almost without fault.

OUR EXPERT SAYS

There aren’t many expensive cameras that are absolutely worth every penny, but the GH2 is definitely one of them. Whilst there is not much cutting edge stuff  here, it is the best Compact System Camera out there. In terms of  image quality, it competes with some of the best digital SLRs. When combined with the range of lenses available and the video capability, this is a very reasonably priced piece of kit. Pansonic make good cameras and this is excellent.
